Cabo de la Vela

Cabo de la Vela is remarkably special as there’s hardly any other beach where you can jeep through sand dunes and end up at a relaxing beach complete with lapping waves, sea breeze and adventure. The indigenous people, the Wayuu, still inhabit the villages nearby and their influence can be seen in the small towns. Brightly-coloured mochilas will be on offer and make great gifts for friends back home and the food is some of Colombia’s best as it doesn’t get fresher than catching the seafood the morning of ordering it.

If you’re an adventurer, this beach is also very popular for kite surfing enthusiasts and for those who want to give it a whirl for the first time, but if you’re just wanting to relax, the long stretch of sand and many coves are perfect for that as well. Booking with Uncharted Colombia makes trying kite boarding a breeze as they will hook you up with local experts. And best of all, they do private and customized trips ensuring that everyone has a fun, relaxing experience away from busy crowds.

Punta Gallinas

If you loved Cabo de la Vela, then you’ll really be jazzed about Punta Gallinas as it is even more secluded. It is also the northernmost beach of all of South America, the place where the sandy land literally drops off into the sea. There’s two ways to get here. You can either go by jeep or by boat. However if given the option, it’s best to go by jeep as you will see more as well as get there quicker.

As far as food goes, you’ll find killer deals on lobster in the nearby town as well as delicious goat cheese (from the indigenous Wayuu people) and fish and shrimp options usually served with a side of rice. After having a bite and soaking up some of the sun, be sure to also check out the nearby mangroves and mud flats where you’ll be able to see migratory flamingos and other animals and creatures that are endemic to the area. Bonus tip: Visit Bahia Hondita bay during your visit; most visitors don’t get the opportunity and you’ll get stellar Instagram photos.

Tayrona National Park

If you’ve had enough time to relax and you’re looking for adventure then the Tayrona National Park is the place to go. Perfect for dive-enthusiasts and snorkelers , this park offers some of the most biodiverse habitats in all of Colombia. The fun doesn’t end in the water, however as there are over 300 species of birds and 108 species of mammals that call this park home. So whether you’re more of a fan of trekking on land or swimming in the sea, Tayrona National Park will have something for you.

If you’re just wanting to be a beach bum and park an umbrella in the sand, there’s also lots of fresh squeezed juices and cocktails that are on offer in the park that will make you feel one at home as you blend into the scenery. The food is known to be a bit more expensive in this area because it’s a protected park and there’s more tourists in the area but you’re also able to bring your own munchies; just speak with your Uncharted Colombia guide on where to score some seriously delicious eats before hitting up the park if that’s what you’d like to do.

The perfect place to relax on the sidelines or swim in the crystal clear water: Islas del Rosario.

Islas del Rosario

Islas del Rosario is one of Colombia’s 46 protected Natural National Parks as this archipelago off the coast of Colombia is home to breathtaking coral reefs. The islands also have an aquarium and oceanarium that visitors can enjoy as well as learn more about the many endemic flora and fauna in the area. And with 30 islands making up the Islas del Rosario, there isn’t a shortage of what to see and discover.

The best part about the Islas del Rosario is the water is crystal clear so even those who don’t want to dive or snorkel can still catch a glimpse of the beauty that lies below during a swim. The various islands also have many luxurious beach-front hotels that you can choose from, letting you carve a little piece of paradise right outside your hotel suite. The Islas del Rosario are perfect for families as there is something for everyone. There’s an educational element, adventure options and of course it’s also a beach bum’s paradise.
